I’ve been looking at education from a lot of different angles lately. Last Friday, when Under Secretary of State William Burns was in Thailand for our annual Strategic Dialogue, he jointly launched the Thai-U.S. “Creative Partnership.” This public-private initiative will enhance the creative industries in both of our nations in such areas as IT, cinema, green technologies, and agrotech. The creative industries increasingly are going to be a vital sector of Thailand’s economy, and there is no better partner in this area than the United States. A critical component of the Creative Partnership is university cooperation. As an example, the U.S. will work with the university consortium in Chiang Mai to help foster IT training in order to better serve the burgeoning tech hub in the North. On Friday evening at my Residence, we hosted a reception with Finance Minister Korn and U/S Burns to celebrate the launch of the Creative Partnership with key Thais and Americans from the government and private sectors who will be involved in this initiative.

Students and other young performers, including KPN Music winner Ekkapan “Piew” Wannasud, entertain guests at my residence on July 8 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of His Majesty’s first State Visit to the United States.

We also celebrated this month the 50th anniversary of His Majesty the King’s first official visit to the United States. During his stay in America, he not only met with President Eisenhower and delivered a message to a joint session of Congress, but he also visited key cities throughout our nation and cemented even stronger cultural ties. He met with Elvis Presley on the set of a movie in Hollywood, played jazz with Benny Goodman in New York, and travelled to Honolulu, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Colonial Williamsburg, New York City, Boston, Knoxville, Colorado Springs, and San Francisco. We honored this groundbreaking trip with a reception at the Residence for young Thais from all segments of society featuring performers from Rangsit University who undoubtedly will continue this legacy of cementing bonds between our two countries.

ในช่วงไม่นานที่ผ่านมานี้ ผมได้หันมามองเรื่องการศึกษาจากแง่มุมที่ต่างออกไป เมื่อวันศุกร์ที่แล้ว ปลัดกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ วิลเลียม เบิร์นส์ ได้เดินทางมาประเทศไทยเพื่อร่วมการประชุมประจำปีที่เรียกว่า Strategic Dialogue และได้ร่วมเปิดตัวโครงการ “ไทย-สหรัฐฯ ร่วมคิดร่วมสร้าง” ซึ่งเป็นโครงการความร่วมมือระหว่างภาครัฐและภาคเอกชนที่มุ่งพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมสร้างสรรค์ในประเทศทั้งสอง เช่น อุตสาหกรรมไอที อุตสาหกรรมภาพยนตร์ เทคโนโลยีที่ช่วยอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม และเทคโนโลยีทางการเกษตร อุตสาหกรรมสร้างสรรค์จะเป็นอุตสาหกรรมที่มีความสำคัญมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ ในภาคเศรษฐกิจของไทย และไม่มีประเทศใดที่จะเป็นประเทศคู่ความร่วมมือกับไทยดีกว่าสหรัฐฯ องค์ประกอบสำคัญของโครงการ “ไทย-สหรัฐฯ ร่วมคิดร่วมสร้าง” คือความร่วมมือจากมหาวิทยาลัย ตัวอย่างเช่น สหรัฐฯ จะทำงานร่วมกับกลุ่มมหาวิทยาลัยในจังหวัดเชียงใหม่ เพื่อส่งเสริมการฝึกอบรมด้านไอทีเพื่อจะได้ให้บริการในฐานะศูนย์กลางด้านเทคโนโลยีในภาคเหนือได้ดีขึ้น ในช่วงค่ำวันศุกร์ คุณกรณ์ จาติกวณิช รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการคลัง ปลัดกระทรวงการต่างประเทศวิลเลียม เบิร์นส์ และผมได้ร่วมกันจัดงานเลี้ยงฉลองการเปิดตัวโครงการ “ไทย-สหรัฐฯ ร่วมคิดร่วมสร้าง” ที่บ้านพักของผม โดยเชิญแขกชาวไทยและอเมริกันจากภาครัฐและภาคเอกชนซึ่งจะมีส่วนร่วมในโครงการดังกล่าวมาร่วมงานด้วย

เดือนนี้ ยังเป็นโอกาสครบรอบ 50 ปีการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยือนสหรัฐฯ อย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรกของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวด้วย ระหว่างที่ทรงพำนักในสหรัฐฯ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้ทรงพบปะกับประธานาธิบดีไอเซ็นฮาวร์ ทรงมีกระแสพระราชดำรัสต่อที่ประชุมร่วมสภาคองเกรส เสด็จฯ เยือนเมืองสำคัญต่างๆ ของสหรัฐฯ และทรงกระชับความสัมพันธ์ทางวัฒนธรรมระหว่างประเทศของเราด้วย พระองค์ทรงพบกับเอลวิส เพรสลีย์ระหว่างการถ่ายทำภาพยนตร์ที่ฮอลลีวูด ทรงเล่นดนตรีแจ๊สร่วมกับเบ็นนี กู๊ดแมนที่นิวยอร์ค และเสด็จประพาสเมืองฮอนโนลูลู ลอสแองเจลิส วอชิงตัน ดี.ซี. เมืองประวัติศาสตร์วิลเลียมส์เบิร์ก นิวยอร์ค บอสตัน น็อกส์วิลล์ โคโลราโดสปริงส์ และซานฟรานซิสโก ผมจัดงานเลี้ยงที่บ้านเพื่อเป็นการรำลึกถึงวโรกาสพิเศษนี้ โดยเชิญเยาวชนไทยจากทุกภาคส่วนของสังคมมาในงาน และมีการแสดงโดยนักศึกษาจากมหาวิทยาลัยรังสิต ซึ่งจะเป็นผู้สานต่อความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างไทยและสหรัฐฯ ต่อไปในอนาคตอย่างแน่นอน

United We Stand

Several members of the Embassy and I went to Ratchaprasong and Saladaeng yesterday morning (May 23) to look at the state of damage in those areas, and to assess how long it might take for the city to return to normal operations. Although we were well aware of the dedication of city workers here in Bangkok, we were amazed and impressed to see thousands of eager volunteers spontaneously joining public employees to literally scrub those neighborhoods clean. As we walked through the area and chatted with people of all ages, the enthusiasm was contagious. Students and adults were pitching in to help with any task, no matter how dirty. They were washing streets, removing graffiti, hauling out weeks-old trash, and doing it with a sense of teamwork that signified pride in their city and the nation.

Clearly, deep political divisions remain in Thailand. Americans, like their Thai friends and allies, regret the violence and mourn the tragic loss of life in Bangkok over the past six weeks. But yesterday’s clean-up operation showed that even though much work remains to address concerns on all sides, the Thai people remain united in building a nation that will be even stronger in the future. I assure you that the United States will remain the closest possible friend the Kingdom can have on its journey ahead.

ผมและเจ้าหน้าที่สถานทูตสหรัฐฯ หลายท่านได้เดินทางไปที่แยกราชประสงค์และแยกศาลาแดงเมื่อเช้าวานนี้ (23 พฤษภาคม) เพื่อสำรวจความเสียหายที่เกิดขึ้นในบริเวณนั้น และเพื่อประเมินว่าจะต้องใช้เวลาอีกเท่าใดกว่ากรุงเทพฯ จะกลับสู่ภาวะปกติ แม้ว่าเราจะทราบดีว่าเจ้าหน้าที่กรุงเทพมหานครกำลังอุทิศตนทำงานอย่างหนัก แต่เราก็รู้สึกประหลาดใจและประทับใจที่ได้เห็นอาสาสมัครหลายพันคนช่วยเจ้าหน้าที่รัฐในการทำความสะอาดอย่างกระตือรือร้น ในขณะที่เราเดินอยู่ที่นั่น และทักทายผู้คนที่มีหลากหลายวัย เรารู้สึกได้ถึงความกระตือรือร้นของทุกคน เด็กนักเรียนและประชาชนช่วยกันทำทุกอย่าง ไม่ว่างานนั้นจะสกปรกหรือไม่ ทั้งล้างถนน ลบข้อความและสีสเปรย์ที่ผู้ชุมนุมเขียนบนฝาผนัง ขนขยะที่ทับถมมานานหลายสัปดาห์ไปทิ้ง และทำทุกอย่างอย่างร่วมแรงร่วมใจและด้วยสปิริตที่บ่งบอกถึงความภาคภูมิใจในเมืองและประเทศของตนเอง

เห็นได้ชัดเจนว่าการแบ่งแยกทางการเมืองอย่างรุนแรงยังคงมีอยู่ในประเทศไทย ชาวอเมริกันต่างรู้สึกเสียใจกับความรุนแรงและเศร้าใจกับการสูญเสียชีวิตที่เกิดขึ้นที่กรุงเทพฯใน ช่วงหกสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาเช่นเดียวกับคนไทย แต่การร่วมกันทำความสะอาดเมื่อวานนี้แสดงให้เห็นว่าแม้ว่ายังมีอีกหลายสิ่งที่ต้องทำเพื่อหาทางแก้ปัญหาให้กับทุกฝ่าย แต่คนไทยก็ยังมีความสามัคคีในการฟื้นฟูประเทศให้กลับมาแข็งแกร่งยิ่งกว่าเดิม ผมขอให้คำมั่นว่าสหรัฐฯ จะเป็นมิตรใกล้ชิดที่สุดของไทยในการเดินหน้าสู่อนาคตข้างหน้า

Jazz Legend Benny Golson: Still Incredible at Age 80!

One of my favorite aspects of being Ambassador is the opportunity to present American culture to Thai audiences. Although taking care of American citizens in Thailand, and representing my government on policy matters are my primary responsibilities, the really fun part of my job is cultural outreach. Like many Thais and Americans, I am a music lover. My passion is for jazz, one of America’s greatest contributions to world culture. Jazz has its roots in the African-American community in the early 1900s. Its cradle was in New Orleans, and it rapidly spread to the rest of the country as African-Americans sought economic opportunity in the industrializing northeast. I’ve been a trombone player since I was ten years old, and as Ambassador have tried to conduct my own brand of “trombone diplomacy,” playing along with jazz bands at a variety of events and venues.

In January, for example, I hosted an event at my residence called “Jazz Under the Stars” commemorating the U.S. holiday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and highlighting the contributions of African-Americans to world culture. The Rangsit University Music Conservatory Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Denny Euprasert, helped entertain the 200 guests, along with an African-American jazz singer from the Conrad Hotel. I was delighted to be able to “sit in” on my trombone for several numbers. I have been fortunate to have the chance over the past year to play for audiences at my residence along with jazz great Benny Golsen and the world-famous Preservation Hall Jazz Band from New Orleans. This was a return engagement in Thailand for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has long been a favorite of His Majesty the King and who has seen them perform on several occasions.

Our Embassy’s Cultural Affairs unit puts on a wide range of programs featuring American artists that reach literally thousands of Thais each year. Most recently, we funded the Youth Excellence on Stage (YES) Academy at Rangsit University. Over 200 aspiring performers from all over Thailand, as well as ten students who traveled from Pakistan and Nepal, signed up for the intensive eight-day training in jazz, hip-hop dance, Broadway musical theater, classical music, and children’s theater. The Academy culminated in two superb gala concerts on May 3 and 4. Unfortunately I was unable to attend because of the press of political events; I was planning to bring my trombone!

Earlier this year, we brought over the amazing San Francisco-based ODC/Dance group. This troupe of contemporary dancers gave performances, workshops, and master classes in Hua Hin and Bangkok over a ten day period for 1,500 Thais. The ODC dancers captured the imaginations of Thai audiences with their athletic ability, nimble movements, flexibility, and aptitude to incorporate Thai traditional dance moves into their repertoire.

Other performers we’ve brought to Thailand just over the last year have included, three-time Grammy Award winning L.A. rock band Ozomatli (I had my trombone!), Grammy nominated Louisiana Cajun and Zydeco star Cedric Watson, classical ensemble Trio Chicago, and an Irish-American folk duo called “The Heatons.” All of these groups performed and held workshops not only in Bangkok, but in several Thai cities.

Our cultural programming is not just about performance. Last fall we put on a successful “American Documentary Showcase,” which included ten award-winning American films on a variety of meaningful topics, such as the environment, and the challenges faced by ethnic minorities. Two U.S. filmmakers came to Thailand for the showcase and met with Thai film students and filmmakers in Bangkok and Nakhon Si Thammarat.

Aside from being just plain fun, these programs serve a very important purpose. Of course they help remind our Thai friends that American culture goes is a lot deeper than Lady Gaga and Hollywood blockbusters. But more importantly, they bring the Thai and American people closer together by focusing on our shared love of the arts. They enable the kind of person-to-person interaction that really helps us to understand each other better.

หน้าที่หนึ่งที่ผมชอบมากในการเป็นเอกอัครราชทูตคือ การได้มีโอกาสแนะนำวัฒนธรรมอเมริกันให้แก่ชาวไทย แม้ว่างานดูแลบุคคลสัญชาติอเมริกันและการเป็นผู้แทนรัฐบาลในเรื่องเกี่ยวกับนโยบายต่างๆ จะเป็นงานหลักของผม แต่ส่วนที่สนุกจริงๆ ของงานผมคือ กิจกรรมสู่ภายนอกด้านวัฒนธรรม ผมเองก็ไม่ต่างจากคนไทยและคนอเมริกันหลายๆ คือ เป็นคนที่รักดนตรี ผมชอบดนตรีแจ๊สที่สุด แจ๊สเป็นสิ่งที่ยิ่งใหญ่ที่สุดที่อเมริกามอบให้แก่วัฒนธรรมสากล แจ๊สมีรากฐานมาจากชุมชนแอฟริกันอเมริกันในช่วงต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 โดยมีแหล่งกำเนิดอยู่ที่เมืองนิวออร์ลีนส์ และแพร่หลายไปอย่างรวดเร็วทั่วประเทศเนื่องจากชาวแอฟริกันอเมริกันแสวงหาโอกาสทางเศรษฐกิจในภูมิภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือที่ทำอุตสาหกรรม ผมเล่นทรัมโบนตั้งแต่อายุ 10 ขวบ และในฐานะที่ผมเป็นเอกอัครราชทูต ผมได้พยายามดำเนินงานด้าน “การทูตภาคทรัมโบน” ในแบบฉบับของผมด้วยการร่วมเล่นกับวงดนตรีแจ๊สในงานและสถานที่ต่างๆ

แผนกวัฒนธรรมของสถานทูตฯ จัดโครงการหลากหลายรูปแบบที่ช่วยให้คนไทยหลายพันคนได้ชื่นชมกับศิลปินอเมริกัน ล่าสุด สถานทูตฯ ได้สนับสนุนโครงการ Youth Excellence on Stage (YES) Academy ที่มหาวิทยาลัยรังสิต มีนักแสดงหน้าใหม่ไฟแรงจากทั่วไทยรวมทั้งนักเรียน 10 คนจากประเทศปากีสถานและเนปาลลงชื่อเข้ารับการอบรมดนตรีแจ๊ส การเต้นฮิปฮอป ละครเพลงบรอดเวย์ เพลงคลาสสิก และละครเด็กระยะเวลา 8 วัน หลังการอบรม YES Academy จัดคอนเสิร์ตสองรอบในวันที่ 3 และ 4 พฤษภาคม โชคไม่ดีที่ผมไม่สามารถไปชมการแสดงได้เพราะสถานการณ์ทางการเมือง ผมวางแผนว่าจะเอาทรัมโบนของผมไปด้วยแล้วเชียว!

มนต์แห่งการเคลื่อนไหวของคณะ ODC/Dance

เมื่อต้นปีนี้ สถานทูตฯ ได้นำคณะ ODC/Dance จากเมืองชิคาโก นักนาฏลีลาร่วมสมัยคณะนี้ได้จัดการแสดง การอบรมเชิงปฏิบัติการและการสอนระดับสูงที่หัวหินและกรุงเทพให้แก่ชาวไทยกว่า 1,500 คนตลอดเวลากว่าสิบวัน นักนาฏลีลาแห่งคณะ ODC นี้สะกดจินตนาการของผู้ชมชาวไทยด้วยความสามารถเยี่ยงนักกีฬา การเคลื่อนไหวร่างกายอย่างแคล่วคล่อง ความสามารถยืดหยุ่นตัว และทักษะในการประยุกต์ลีลาการรำแบบไทยเดิมให้เข้ากับการแสดงของพวกเขาได้

นักแสดงคนอื่นๆ ที่เราเชิญมาเมืองไทยในปีที่ผ่านมาได้แก่ วง Ozomatli วงดนตรีเพลงร็อคจาก Los Angeles ที่ได้รางวัลแกรมมี่ 3 ครั้ง (ผมเอาทรัมโบนของผมไปด้วย!) โครงการด้านวัฒนธรรมของเราไม่ใช่ว่ามีแค่การแสดงเท่านั้น เมื่อฤดูใบไม้ร่วงปีที่แล้ว เราได้จัดงาน “American Documentary Showcase” ซึ่งมีภาพยนตร์อเมริกันที่มีเนื้อหาที่มีความสำคัญต่างๆ ที่ได้รับรางวัล 10 เรื่อง โดยมีเนื้อหาเกี่ยวกับสภาพแวดล้อมและปัญหาของชนกลุ่มน้อยทางเชื้อชาติ เป็นต้น ผู้สร้างภาพยนตร์ชาวสหรัฐฯ สองคนได้เดินทางมาในงานนี้และได้พบกับนักศึกษาไทยที่เรียนวิชาภาพยนตร์ตลอดจนผู้สร้างภาพยนตร์ชาวไทยในกรุงเทพฯ และนครศรีธรรมราช

นอกจากสนุกแล้ว โครงการเหล่านี้ยังมีวัตถุประสงค์ที่สำคัญมาก คือ เป็นการเตือนให้เพื่อนชาวไทยของเราได้ทราบว่าวัฒนธรรมอเมริกันนั้นมีอะไรที่ลึกซึ้งมากมายกว่า Lady Gaga และภาพยนตร์ดังจาก Hollywood และที่สำคัญยิ่งไปกว่านั้นคือ โครงการเหล่านี้ทำให้คนไทยและคนอเมริกันรู้สึกใกล้ชิดกันยิ่งขึ้นด้วยการเน้นความที่มีใจรักศิลปะเหมือนกัน โครงการเหล่านี้ช่วยเสริมสร้างการปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลที่ทำให้เราเข้าใจกันดียิ่งขึ้น

U.S.-Thai Friendship: 177 Years and Still Going Strong

I had a wonderful experience at the Bank of Thailand recently that was an excellent reminder of just how long and deep the relationship is between the United States and the Kingdom of Thailand. On March 20, 1833 the United States and Thailand signed the Treaty of Amity and Commerce, the United States’ first treaty with a nation in Asia, making Thailand our oldest friend in the region. Just over 177 years later, on March 25, 2010, I was fortunate to sign agreements with the Bank of Thailand and Thailand’s Deposit Protection Agency that demonstrate how the strong partnership that binds our nations together continues today.

In an afternoon ceremony in the Bank of Thailand’s absolutely beautiful museum, I signed on behalf of the U.S. government agreements through which advisors from the U.S. Department of the Treasury will be assigned to work temporarily at both the Bank and at Thailand’s Deposit Protection Agency. Working alongside counterparts at each institution, the advisors will help support the development of an even stronger financial sector and sound public financial management in Thailand. The Treasury Department maintains a cadre of specialized experts for just this purpose; to support of the economic and financial goals of governments around the world.

Bank of Thailand Governor Tarisa Watanagase and Deposit Protection Agency President Singha Nikornpun signed the agreements for their respective agencies as a group of thirty to forty of their staff looked on. The spontaneous applause of the assembled group punctuated the overwhelmingly positive event that left all with a greater appreciation of the extent to which our two nations work together in a number of areas.

As if that were not enough, Governor Tarisa arranged for me to have a surprise tour of the Bank of Thailand museum, which serves the integral role of preserving the legacy of Thailand’s currency – an important part of the Kingdom of Thailand’s cultural heritage. The museum opened on January 9, 1993 at a ceremony presided over by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. The museum includes a number of different rooms with exhibits explaining many aspects of Thailand’s central bank and currency, including its history and how it is made. There are even interactive exhibits, videos, and games geared for children. The museum, which resides in the Bang Khunphrom Palace just off the Chao Phraya river, is simply stunning.

All in all, I could not have asked for a better way to spend my afternoon.

เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผมได้ไปร่วมงานที่น่าประทับใจงานหนึ่งที่ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย เป็นงานที่ย้ำเตือนถึงสัมพันธภาพอันยาวนานและลึกซึ้งระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกาและประเทศไทย เมื่อวันที่ 20 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2376 สหรัฐฯ และไทยได้ลงนามในสนธิสัญญาไมตรีและพาณิชย์ ซึ่งเป็นสนธิสัญญาฉบับแรกที่สหรัฐฯ ลงนามร่วมกับชาติในเอเชีย ซึ่งการลงนามครั้งนั้นได้ทำให้ไทยกลายเป็นมิตรที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดของสหรัฐฯ ในภูมิภาค อีก 177 ปีต่อมา ในวันที่ 25 มีนาคม พ.ศ. 2553 ผมโชคดีที่ได้มีโอกาสลงนามในข้อตกลงกับธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยและสถาบันคุ้มครองเงินฝาก ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องพิสูจน์ถึงความร่วมมืออันใกล้ชิดและผูกพันประเทศของเราทั้งสองซึ่งดำเนินต่อมาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

ผมเป็นตัวแทนของรัฐบาลสหรัฐฯ ในพิธีลงนามซึ่งจัดขึ้นในช่วงบ่ายที่อาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่งดงามของธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย ภายใต้ข้อตกลงนี้ ที่ปรึกษาจากกระทรวงการคลังสหรัฐฯ ได้รับมอบหมายให้เดินทางมาปฏิบัติหน้าที่ชั่วคราวที่ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยและสถาบันคุ้มครองเงินฝาก โดยที่ปรึกษาเหล่านี้จะช่วยสนับสนุนการพัฒนาภาคการเงิน และการจัดการด้านการเงินสาธารณะของไทยให้เข็มแข็งยิ่งขึ้น กระทรวงการคลังสหรัฐฯ มีคณะผู้เชี่ยวชาญในสาขานี้โดยเฉพาะ เพื่อให้การสนับสนุนเป้าหมายทางเศรษฐกิจและการเงินของรัฐบาลทั่วโลก

คุณธาริษา วัฒนเกส ผู้ว่าการธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยและคุณสิงหะ นิกรพันธุ์ ผู้อำนวยการสถาบันคุ้มครองเงินฝากได้ร่วมลงนามข้อตกลง โดยมีเจ้าหน้าที่ 30-40 ท่านจากหน่วยงานทั้งสองร่วมเป็นสักขีพยาน เสียงปรบมืออย่างพร้อมเพรียงของทุกคนย้ำถึงแรงสนับสนุนที่มีต่อความร่วมมือที่เกิดขึ้นในวันนี้ ซึ่งยิ่งทำให้ทุกคนตระหนักว่าประเทศของเราทั้งสองมีความร่วมมือในสาขาต่างๆ มากมายเพียงใด

หลังจากนั้น ท่านผู้ว่าการธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยยังได้พาผมเดินชมพิพิธภัณฑ์ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทย ซึ่งมีบทบาทสำคัญในการเก็บรักษาเงินตราของประเทศ และเป็นส่วนสำคัญของมรดกทางวัฒนธรรมของไทย พิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้เปิดเมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2536 โดยพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว และสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินมาทรงเป็นองค์ประธานในพิธี ในพิพิธภัณฑ์ มีห้องต่างๆ ที่จัดแสดงนิทรรศการข้อมูลเกี่ยวกับธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยและระบบเงินตรา รวมทั้งประวัติความเป็นมาและวิธีผลิตเหรียญกษาปน์และธนบัตร นอกจากนี้ ยังมีนิทรรศการเชิงปฏิสัมพันธ์ วีดิทัศน์ และเกมส์สำหรับเด็กๆ พิพิธภัณฑ์ธนาคารแห่งประเทศไทยแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ที่วังบางขุนพรหม ริมฝั่งแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา เป็นสถานที่ที่งดงามอย่างยิ่ง

โดยสรุปแล้ว ผมต้องบอกว่าบ่ายวันนั้นเป็นช่วงเวลาที่น่าประทับใจอย่างยิ่งสำหรับผมครับ

Northern Exposure (and the East, too)

Wat Pongsanuk

I have had some wonderful official travel in Thailand recently. In Lamphang, I visited Wat Pongsanuk, where the U.S. State Department is sponsoring UNESCO’s Museum-to-Museum Partnership Program, as well as Wat Prakaew Don Tao, where the Emerald Buddha once was housed. The temples were beautiful, and the efforts to preserve each site were impressive. At Wat Pongsanuk, staff had worked with experts from the United States to preserve and store gorgeous old temple paintings. The restoration of the main temple had been carried out with loving detail. Although the temple itself was not large, the artistry reflected the unique culture of the area.

After Lamphang, I drove to Phrae, where I led a grant ceremony for the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation, where we presented $20,000 to the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center for Archaeology and Fine Arts (SEAMEO-SPAFA) Director Dr. Pisit Charoenwongsa.

Wongburi House Museum

The project will help preserve its rare architectural heritage of old teak homes. Phrae was once the center of Thailand’s largest teak forests, and the homes built almost a century ago from this teak are rapidly disappearing. We held the presentation ceremony at Khum Chao Luang, a museum and community center that had a fascinating photo display of the history of the teak industry. The project that we are funding will raise public awareness of the cultural value of the remaining homes, and document their history. After the ceremony, the Deputy Governor of the province, Khun Seri Kampirathammo, and I went with a large group on a pedicab tour of the sites, as well as the Seri Thai Museum in Phrae. The Wongburi House Museum was especially beautiful, and I encourage any visitor to Phrae to stop by. One interesting item on display there was a shirt that, as was explained to me, one would wear underneath clothing to protect oneself from evil spirits. I’ll attach the photo so you can see it. I felt a little bad riding the pedicab, because I must have been about twice the size of the normal passenger, but the driver kept reassuring me that it was no problem.

Finally, I also had the opportunity to visit Prachinburi province. What a great place! I started the day by volunteering to help with a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile visit. This was a collaborative effort with the Thai Red Cross and Top Charoen Optical to provide free optical exams and eyeglasses to over 350 underprivileged students from nearby government schools. I joined Governor Siripong Hantrakul at the opening ceremony, and had the opportunity to help with the initial phase of the eyescreening. The kids were absolutely wonderful. I had wonderful discussions with them about what they want to be when they grow up (lots of nurses and teachers), what their favorite subjects are (math and English), and what their favorite sports are (soccer and volleyball – I couldn’t get any of them to agree with me that basketball is the best sport).

After the McDonalds/Red Cross event, I visited the nearby Prachinburi National Museum. What an unexpected pleasure! The museum displays were very well done, and highlighted the spectacular art of the Dvaravati and early Khmer period. I was reminded of what a young country the United States is with respect to the history of the Thai nation. Here is a photo I took of an amazing lintel from 7th Century Northern Prasat Khao Noi in Sa Kaew Province in the early Prei Kmeng period. It is so well preserved and the image so alive that I could not help but be captivated by it

Outside the traditional medicine museum

I finished the day with a visit to the Thai Traditional Medicine Museum located in the splendid Chaophya Abhaibhubejr Building, which was constructed in 1909 by Chao Phrya Abhaibhubejr, the former governor of Prachinburi, as the residence of King Rama V during his visit to the province. The home is a stunning example of early 20th century architecture. Even more interesting was the fact that it is now a traditional medicine museum. I learned a great deal about traditional medicines that day, and even bought several natural remedies to try upon my return to Bangkok.

I learn a tremendous amount about Thailand and its people when I travel. Everywhere I go, it seems, there are unique cultural twists, proving what a special country this is. I always look forward to meeting Thais anywhere I go, whether here in Bangkok, or in the provinces.

เมื่อเร็วๆ นี้ ผมได้เดินทางไปปฏิบัติภารกิจในต่างจังหวัด ผมเดินทางไปที่จังหวัดลำปางและได้แวะเยี่ยมชมวัดปงสนุก ที่วัดแห่งนี้ กระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐฯ ได้ให้การสนับสนุนโครงการเครือข่ายพิพิธภัณฑ์ของยูเนสโก (UNESCO’s Museum-to Museum Partnership Program) เช่นเดียวกับที่วัดพระแก้วดอนเต้า ซึ่งเคยเป็นที่ประดิษฐานของพระแก้วมรกต วัดทั้งสองแห่งนี้งดงาม และความพยายามในการอนุรักษ์วัดแต่ละแห่งก็น่าประทับใจ ที่วัดปงสนุก เจ้าหน้าที่ของวัดได้ทำงานร่วมกับผู้เชี่ยวชาญจากสหรัฐฯ เพื่ออนุรักษ์และเก็บรักษางานจิตรกรรมฝาผนังที่งดงามและเก่าแก่ งานบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ตัวอุโบสถก็ทำอย่างงดงามประณีต แม้ว่าวัดปงสนุกจะไม่ใช่วัดใหญ่ แต่งานศิลปะของวัดก็สะท้อนถึงวัฒนธรรมอันเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของจังหวัดนี้

ผมยังได้เดินทางไปยังจังหวัดปราจีนบุรีด้วยและพบว่าจังหวัดนี้น่าสนใจมาก ผมเริ่มต้นการเยือนด้วยการอาสาช่วยในหน่วยบริการตรวจสายตาและสุขภาพเคลื่อนที่ของมูลนิธิโรนัลด์ แมคโดนัลด์ เฮาส์ ประเทศไทย ซึ่งร่วมมือกับสภากาชาดไทยและห้างแว่นตาท็อปเจริญในการให้บริการวัดสายตาประกอบแว่นฟรีแก่นักเรียนยากจนกว่า 350 คนจากโรงเรียนของรัฐในแถบนั้น นอกจากนี้ ผมและท่านผู้ว่าราชการ ศิริพงษ์ ห่านตระกูล ยังได้ร่วมกันทำพิธีเปิดการให้บริการวัดสายตา และยังได้ช่วยในขั้นตอนแรกของการตรวจสายตาด้วย เด็กๆ น่ารักมาก ผมได้ถามเด็กๆ ว่าเมื่อโตขึ้นอยากเป็นอะไร หลายคนบอกอยากเป็นนางพยาบาลหรือครู ส่วนเรื่องวิชาที่ชอบเรียน บางคนบอกว่าชอบเลขและบางคนก็บอกว่าชอบภาษาอังกฤษ พอถามเรื่องกีฬา ส่วนใหญ่บอกว่าชอบฟุตบอลหรือวอลเลย์บอล ผมพยามเกลี้ยกล่อมเด็กๆ ว่ากีฬาที่สนุกที่สุดคือบาสเก็ตบอล แต่เด็กๆ ไม่ยอมเห็นด้วย!

ทับหลังสมัยศตวรรษที่ 7 จากปราสาทเขาน้อย

หลังทำกิจกรรมกับมูลนิธิโรนัลด์ แมคโดนัลด์ เฮาส์ แล้ว ผมได้ไปเยี่ยมชมพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งชาติปราจีนบุรี และได้รับความเพลิดเพลินอย่างคาดไม่ถึง การจัดแสดงสิ่งของต่างๆ ทำได้ดีมากและสะท้อนความงดงามของศิลปะสมัยทวาราวดีและขอมตอนต้น ทำให้ผมคิดว่าอเมริกาเป็นประเทศที่ใหม่มากเมื่อเทียบกับประวัติศาสตร์ที่เก่าแก่ของไทย ข้างล่างนี้เป็นภาพถ่ายทับหลังสมัยศตวรรษที่ 7 จากประสาทเขาน้อยจังหวัดสระแก้ว ซึ่งผมถ่ายไว้ เป็นศิลปะขอมแบบไพรกเม็ง ทับหลังชิ้นนี้ได้รับการเก็บรักษาไว้อย่างดีและภาพที่แกะสลักก็ดูเหมือนมีชีวิตและงดงามมาก

ผมปิดท้ายการเดินทางด้วยการเยี่ยมชมพิพิธภัณฑ์แพทย์แผนไทยอภัยภูเบศร ซึ่งตั้งอยู่ภายในตึกเจ้าพระยาอภัยภูเบศร ตึกแห่งนี้ เจ้าพระยาอภัยภูเบศร์ ข้าหลวงมณฑลปราจีนบุรีได้สั่งให้สร้างขึ้นใน พ.ศ. 2452 เพื่อใช้เป็นที่ประทับของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวระหว่างเสด็จประพาสมณฑลปราจีนบุรี อาคารหลังนี้เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมยุคต้นศตวรรษที่ 20 ที่งามสง่า ที่น่าสนใจอย่างยิ่งก็คืออาคารหลังนี้ได้กลายเป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์แพทย์แผนไทยในปัจจุบัน ผมได้ความรู้มากมายเกี่ยวกับยาไทยในวันนั้น และยังซื้อยาสมุนไพรกลับมาลองใช้ที่กรุงเทพฯ ด้วยครับ

ทุกครั้งที่ผมเดินทาง ผมได้เรียนรู้มากมายเกี่ยวกับเมืองไทยและคนไทย ดูเหมือนว่าไม่ว่าผมจะไปที่ไหน จะมีวัฒนธรรมที่น่าสนใจและเป็นเอกลักษณ์ให้เห็นอยู่เสมอ ซึ่งเป็นเครื่องพิสูจน์ว่าไทยเป็นประเทศที่มีความพิเศษเพียงไร ผมชอบที่จะได้พบปะกับคนไทยทุกที่ที่ผมไป ไม่ว่าจะเป็นที่กรุงเทพฯ หรือต่างจังหวัด

College Football!

I attended the annual Chulalongkorn-Thammasat football game last Saturday, and came away tremendously impressed by this fantastic event.

First of all, the atmosphere was wonderful. The cheering sections on both sides were unlike anything I have seen in the United States. By using coordinated placards, students from each university displayed beautiful portraits of His Majesty the King to start the match. As the game progressed, the students put together a series of pictures that were either inspirational or humorous, all of it conveying both respect and wit. At some points, in fact, the competition between the cheering sections was even more entertaining than the excellent game.

Coming from the United States, I grew up following basketball, baseball and American football much more closely than football. The competitive spirit in all of these sports at the collegiate level is similar, but what impressed me most about this football match was the sportsmanship on display. The athletes on the field did not fight with each other or the referees. Indeed, when players were accidentally injured, opposing players immediately came to their assistance. They congratulated opponents on good plays, and played the match with all of their heart. Spectators did not insult the opposition, preferring to enthusiastically root for their own team. There was no alcohol in the stands and no violence. Everyone was there to simply enjoy the match and the atmosphere. I learned a lot about sportsmanship that day.

The other highlight of the afternoon was the pre-game parade. Seldom have a seen a spectacle as colorful as the students of both universities put on that day. Humorous parade floats, great musicians, and exuberant cheerleaders made for a great display. This was clearly not just a game between two teams, but a community building event for all of the alumni and students of Chulalongkorn and Thammasat communities.

And, just in case you were wondering, I should note that although I was honored to sit with the Chulalongkorn section, I was supporting both schools. You can see that I carefully avoided wearing either school’s colors, and stuck with a neutral bright green. Fortunately, the game ended in a 0-0 tie, and everyone in the stadium was able to walk out a winner after the match.

ฟุตบอลประเพณีจุฬาฯ-ธรรมศาสตร์!

เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่แล้ว ผมได้ไปชมการแข่งขันฟุตบอลประเพณีจุฬาฯ-ธรรมศาสตร์ ผมสนุกและประทับใจมากครับ

ข้อแรก ผมชอบบรรยากาศของงานมาก ฝ่ายเชียร์ของทั้งสองมหาวิทยาลัยเก่งมากและแตกต่างจากที่ผมเคยเห็นมาในสหรัฐฯ นิสิตจุฬาฯ และนักศึกษาธรรมศาสตร์ใช้แผ่นกระดาษแข็งในการแปรอักษรเป็นภาพพระบรมฉายาลักษณ์อันงดงามของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเพื่อเปิดการแข่งขัน ระหว่างการแข่งขัน ทั้งสองฝ่ายก็ผลัดกันแปรอักษรเป็นภาพต่างๆ บางภาพก็ให้ข้อคิดดีๆ บางภาพก็ตลกขบขัน แต่ทุกๆ ภาพล้วนแสดงถึงความอ่อนน้อมและปฏิภาณของนิสิตนักศึกษา ในบางช่วง การผลัดกันรุกและรับของฝ่ายเชียร์กลับสนุกกว่าการแข่งขันด้วยซ้ำ

ที่อเมริกา ผมเติบโตมาพร้อมๆ กับกีฬาบาสเก็ตบอล เบสบอล และอเมริกันฟุตบอลมากกว่ากีฬาฟุตบอลแบบนี้ แม้ว่าสปิริตของการแข่งขันกีฬาแบบนี้ในระดับมหาวิทยาลัยของอเมริกาจะคล้ายๆ กับของไทย แต่สิ่งที่ผมประทับใจมากที่สุดในการแข่งขันฟุตบอลประเพณีครั้งนี้ก็คือการมีน้ำใจนักกีฬา ผมไม่เห็นการทะเลาะวิวาทระหว่างนักกีฬาด้วยกันหรือกับกรรมการเลย ยิ่งไปกว่านั้น เมื่อผู้เล่นได้รับบาดเจ็บโดยอุบัติเหตุ ผู้เล่นฝ่ายตรงข้ามกลับรีบมาช่วยด้วยซ้ำ นอกจากนั้น ผู้เล่นยังชมฝ่ายตรงข้ามเมื่อเล่นได้ดี และทุกคนเล่นกันอย่างเต็มที่ ฝ่ายผู้ชมก็จะเชียร์ผู้เล่นฝ่ายของตน โดยไม่มีการด่าทอคู่แข่ง ไม่มีเครื่องดื่มแอลกอฮอล์และไม่มีการใช้ความรุนแรงบนอัฒจันทร์ ทุกคนมาเพื่อชมการแข่งขันและเพลิดเพลินกับบรรยากาศ ผมได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับการมีน้ำใจนักกีฬาเป็นอย่างมากในวันนั้น

ช่วงสำคัญอีกช่วงหนึ่งของงานในวันนั้นคือพาเหรดก่อนการแข่งขัน ผมไม่ค่อยเห็นขบวนพาเหรดที่เต็มไปด้วยสีสันเท่าที่นักศึกษาของสองสถาบันแสดงในวันนั้นเลย มีทั้งพาเหรดแบบตลกขบขัน นักดนตรีที่มีฝีมือ และเชียร์ลีดเดอร์ที่สนุกสนานร่าเริง งานนี้ไม่ใช่เพียงการแข่งกีฬาระหว่างสองทีมเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการสร้างความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างศิษย์เก่า ศิษย์ปัจจุบันของทั้งสองสถาบันด้วย

และถ้าคุณบังเอิญสงสัยว่าผมเชียร์ฝ่ายใด ผมก็ขอเฉลยว่าแม้ว่าผมจะได้รับเกียรติให้นั่งอยู่กับซีกของจุฬาฯ แต่ผมก็เชียร์ทั้งสองสถาบัน คุณจะเห็นว่าผมหลีกเลี่ยงที่จะใส่เสื้อที่เป็นสีประจำมหาวิทยาลัยทั้งสอง และใส่เสื้อสีเขียวสดมาแทนแสดงถึงความเป็นกลาง โชคดีที่การแข่งขันในวันนั้นเสมอกัน 0-0 ทุกคนก็เลยกลับบ้านในฐานะผู้ชนะ!

The past month has been a wonderful period to be in Thailand. From November 15 through 17, my wife and I had the honor of working with former President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter in Chiang Mai on a Habitat for Humanity Build. Almost 2000 volunteers from the United States, Thailand, and other nations came to Chiang Mai to build 82 homes in honor of His Majesty the King’s 82nd birthday. President Carter and his wife were inspirational on many levels. They are in their mid-80s, have been married for 63 years, and worked with greater energy and commitment than almost anyone else at the Build. Despite unseasonably hot weather (the thermometer read 36 degrees centigrade), the Carters worked nine hours each day on their home. They were joined by many others, including the future occupants of the house. The Carters later in the week visited other sites in the Mekong where HFH is building homes, including China, Cambodia and Vietnam. They returned to Chiang Mai on November 20 and presented keys to the complete homes to each of the 82 new homeowners. Before Sophia and I returned to Bangkok, we also made sure to visit our favorite Khao Soi restaurant in Chiang Mai on Fah Haam Road. We had a great feast of Khao Soi, Naam Priick Nuum, and Chiang Mai sausages!

When I returned to Bangkok, I had the opportunity to open the 4th Annual USA Fair at Siam Paragon. Over the course of November 19 to 22, nearly 25,000 visitors stopped in to purchase great American products and see displays of some of the fantastic work that U.S. companies are doing here in Thailand, including Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). There was also a great booth staffed by our dedicated Embassy staff to explain the many services we have to offer. On November 21, we also ran a seminar for students who want to learn about studying in the United States. And with regard to CSR, the following week I attended American Chamber of Commerce’s annual CSR luncheon awards, which recognizes the outstanding charitable work done by American companies here in the Kingdom. This year’s winners were Microsoft and Qualcom, who are doing breakthrough work in assisting schools throughout the country. Microsoft has initiated an exciting “Partners in Learning” program to fully integrate technology into students’ learning through innovative programs and curricula. Qualcomm’s partnership with provincial health centers has enabled rural communities to have access to medical doctors, nurses and services through wireless connectivity. Late November also is when Americans celebrate Thanksgiving, which commemorates the first dinner that the Pilgrims had in 1621 with the Native Americans who helped them survive their first winter on American shores. Sophia and I had a number of events around Thanksgiving, not only a small dinner at home (where I cooked the turkey for our guests), but also at the Mahamek Boys Orphanage with 150 great kids. We also were honored to host fifty American Peace Corps volunteers at our Residence for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. These men and women are great representatives of America, and they relish the opportunity to work in Thailand. Many are now fluent in Thai, and all of them are in love with the Kingdom.

Finally, I have had the honor over the past week to join in the celebrations of the His Majesty the King’s 82nd birthday. Like the entire Thai nation, I was heartened to see the King on TV on December 5 at the Amarin Winitchai Throne Hall in the Grand Palace in his meeting with government leaders. I also attended the Government’s birthday reception on December 7, and joined the diplomatic corps on December 8 for an audience with His Royal Highness, the Crown Prince. The Embassy set up a booth on Rajdamnoen Avenue to commemorate the King’s links to the United States, including his birth in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his two state visits to our nation. We now have set up that display in our main lobby. President Obama sent a written birthday greeting, and Secretary of State Clinton sent our first-ever video greeting on the occasion of the King’s birthday.

สุดท้ายนี้ เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ผมได้มีโอกาสร่วมเฉลิมฉลองวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา 82 พรรษาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ผมรู้สึกประทับใจเช่นเดียวกับพสกนิกรชาวไทยทุกคนเมื่อได้ชมการถ่ายทอดสดพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเสด็จฯ ออกมหาสมาคม ณ พระที่นั่งอมรินทรวินิจฉัยในช่วงเช้าวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม ผมยังได้ไปร่วมงานสันนิบาตที่รัฐบาลไทยจัดขึ้นเนื่องในวโรกาสวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษาในวันที่ 7 ธันวาคม และในวันที่ 8 ธันวาคม ผมและคณะทูตจากประเทศต่างๆ ก็ได้เข้าเฝ้าสมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช สยามมกุฎราชกุมารด้วย นอกจากนี้ สถานทูตสหรัฐอเมริกายังได้ตั้งซุ้มที่ถนนราชดำเนินเพื่อรำลึกถึงความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวและประเทศสหรัฐฯ โดยมีการแสดงนิทรรศการเกี่ยวกับการเสด็จพระราชสมภพที่เมืองเคมบริดจ์ รัฐแมสซาชูเซ็ทส์ และการเสด็จฯ เยือนสหรัฐฯ อย่างเป็นทางการสองครั้ง ขณะนี้ เราได้นำนิทรรศการดังกล่าวมาตั้งแสดงที่ห้องโถงกลางของสถานทูตฯ ประธานาธิบดีโอบามายังได้ส่งสาส์นถวายพระพรและเป็นครั้งแรกที่รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศ ฮิลลารี คลินตันได้ส่งสาส์นในรูปแบบวิดีโอเพื่อถวายพระพรพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวเนื่องในวโรกาสวันเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา

“Peace, Hope and Loy Krathong”

Last week was both busy and fulfilling, and demonstrated the importance of our bilateral relationship. The new Director of the Peace Corps, Mr. Aaron Williams, visited Thailand for the week. He chaired a conference with the country directors of all of our Peace Corps programs in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We were proud to be able to host the event in Thailand, especially since the Peace Corps program here is one of the oldest in the world, dating from 1962. During that time, almost five thousand Americans have volunteered their service here in Thailand, with most of them maintaining a strong bond with the Kingdom. While here, Director Williams was able to visit several Peace Corps volunteers in Utthai Thani and Chainat Provinces to see the work that they are doing with their communities. Later in the week, I accompanied him in separate calls on the Crown Princess and the Prime Minister. Crown Princess Sirindhorn fondly remembered many visits she has had with American volunteers over the years in provinces throughout the country, even recalling names of those she met years ago. The Prime Minister also was intimately familiar with the work of the Peace Corps throughout the country. We also met with Khun Apinan Phatarathiyanon, head of the Thailand International Development Cooperation Agency (TICA), who described Thailand’s own efforts to provide volunteer assistance overseas.

During this same week, we also hosted Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Deputy Assistant Secretary Scot Marciel on both ends of their visit to Burma to meet with Aung San Suu Kyi and members of the government. This is our highest level of dialogue with Burma in over a decade. For me and my wife, however, the most fun we had last week was Loy Krathong. We spent the evening by the Chao Phraya River with friends, and floated our krathongs after enjoying a fantastic fireworks show. The river was gorgeous that night, and crowded with boats of all sizes and colors. Sophia and I loved the folk songs from the festival, and appreciated everything about that special day.

อย่างไรก็ดี สิ่งที่สนุกที่สุดสำหรับผมกับภรรยาในสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมาคือ งานลอยกระทง เราชมบรรยากาศยามเย็นริมฝั่งแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยากับเพื่อนๆ และหลังจากชมการแสดงพลุที่น่าตื่นตาตื่นใจ พวกเราก็ลอยกระทงกัน คืนนั้น แม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาสวยงามมาก เต็มไปด้วยเรือมากมายที่มีขนาดและสีสันหลากหลาย ผมกับโซเฟียชอบเพลงพื้นบ้านที่เล่นในงานลอยกระทงและชอบทุกอย่างเกี่ยวกับวันที่แสนจะพิเศษนั้น

USA Fair 2009

I am delighted to start a blog in order to share some of the activities that I enjoy here in Thailand to promote the Thai-U.S. relationship. I hope to be able to update you on an informal and fairly regular basis.

Interview at Eazy FM 105.5 with DJ Khun Nip

I just returned this afternoon from an interview at Eazy FM 105.5 with their DJ, Khun Nip. I used to be a DJ in college, and this was my third visit to 105.5 as Ambassador. My thirty-minute session today focused on the upcoming USA Fair, which will be held at Siam Paragon November 19-22. The theme of the Fair this year is “Clean and Green,” and will feature four exhibition sections: Lifestyle, Education, Taste, and Visit USA. The Embassy and the American Chamber of Commerce in Thailand have organized the USA Fair, and it is sponsored by Amway, American International Assurance, Coca-Cola, Dow and Ford. I’m particularly excited by the “Clean and Green” theme, because both the Obama and the Abhisit Administrations support it so strongly. The possibility of cooperation on renewable and alternative energy projects offers significant ways in which we can work to create jobs in both of our countries, while at the same time tackle global climate change.

If I can continue my plug for the USA Fair, I’d also like to note that the U.S. Embassy will have a significant presence there. We will have staff from our Consular, Commercial, Human Resources, Agriculture and Public Affairs Sections there to meet with anyone who visits the fair. We’re also going to have a US Education Pavilion – in cooperation with Western Digital, Oracle and Dell – to showcase U.S. technology and promote higher education in America. On Saturday, November 21, we are going to have a series of talks on subjects related to studying in the U.S. This is the perfect time of year for prospective students to look at studying in America next year. I should know – I just returned from a week of visiting American universities with my daughter, who is a high school senior here in Bangkok.

I am now off to Turkish National Day, and then the Thai premier of “This is It,” the movie about Michael Jackson’s final concert rehearsals. My family and I are huge fans of his music, and we want to pay tribute to his memory this evening.

ผมดีใจที่ได้เริ่มเขียนบล็อกของตนเอง เพื่อจะได้มีโอกาสเล่าถึงสิ่งต่างๆ ที่ผมทำเพื่อกระชับความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างประเทศไทยและสหรัฐฯ ผมหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าจะสามารถเล่าให้ทุกคนฟังอย่างสม่ำเสมอและเป็นกันเองนะครับ

บ่ายวันนี้ ผมเพิ่งกลับจากให้สัมภาษณ์ทางสถานีวิทยุ Eazy FM 105.5 กับดีเจนิป สมัยเรียนมหาวิทยาลัย ผมเคยเป็นดีเจ และตั้งแต่ที่ผมมารับตำแหน่งเอกอัครราชทูตสหรัฐฯ ที่เมืองไทย ครั้งนี้เป็นครั้งที่สามแล้วที่ผมได้ไปเยือนสถานี FM 105.5 วันนี้ ผมออกอากาศนานครึ่งชั่วโมงและพูดถึงงาน USA Fair ซึ่งจะจัดขึ้นที่ห้างสยามพารากอนระหว่างวันที่ 19-22 พฤศจิกายนที่จะถึงนี้ เนื้อหาหลักของงานปีนี้คือ “สะอาดและเป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม” เราจะจัดนิทรรศการสี่ส่วนในงาน คือ ไลฟ์สไตล์ การศึกษา อาหาร และการท่องเที่ยว สถานทูตสหรัฐฯ และหอการค้าอเมริกันในประเทศไทยเป็นผู้จัดงาน USA Fair โดยได้รับความอุปถัมภ์จากบริษัทแอมเวย์ เอไอเอ โคคา-โคล่า ดาวเคมิคอล และฟอร์ด ผมตื่นเต้นกับเนื้อหาหลัก “สะอาดและเป็นมิตรต่อสิ่งแวดล้อม” ในปีนี้เป็นพิเศษ เพราะทั้งรัฐบาลโอบามาและรัฐบาลอภิสิทธิ์ต่างสนับสนุนอย่างแข็งขันในเรื่องนี้ ความร่วมมือในโครงการพลังงานหมุนเวียนและพลังงานทดแทนที่อาจมีขึ้นจะช่วยสร้างงานในประเทศของเราทั้งสอง และในขณะเดียวกันก็จะช่วยแก้ปัญหาการเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพภูมิอากาศด้วย

ขณะนี้ ผมกำลังจะไปงานวันชาติตุรกี และหลังจากนั้น จะไปชมภาพยนตร์ This is It ซึ่งเป็นภาพการซ้อมก่อนขึ้นแสดงคอนเสิร์ตครั้งสุดท้ายของไมเคิล แจ๊คสัน และฉายรอบแรกในเมืองไทยวันนี้ ผมและครอบครัวเป็นแฟนเหนียวแน่นของไมเคิล แจ๊คสัน เราจึงอยากรำลึกถึงเขาเป็นครั้งสุดท้ายในวันนี้ครับ
